Sapphire – Birth Stone For Taurus

Sapphire is the birthstone associated with September. It is associated with 45th wedding anniversary, which is sometimes also known as the sapphire anniversary.

Blue sapphire is associated with Saturn, yellow sapphire with Jupiter in Vedic astrology. It is understood that word Sapphire seems to be a corrupted form of Sanipriya (Sanskrit:- Sani = Saturn, Priya = Beloved). Buddhist monks who moved to Middle East introduced the Stone as Sani piriya and eventually become sapir and sapphire.

There are various types of sapphire - Blue sapphire, Fancy color sapphire, Padparadscha, Color change sapphire, and Star sapphire.

Blue sapphire is evaluated based upon the purity of its primary hue. Purple, violet and green are the normal secondary hues found in blue sapphire. Violet and purple can contribute to the overall beauty of the color, green is considered a distinct negative. Blue sapphire with no more than 15% violet or purple should be considered fine color. Blue sapphire with any amount of green as a secondary hue is not considered to be fine quality. Gray is the normal saturation modifier or mask found in blue sapphire. Gray reduces the saturation or brightness of the hue and therefore has a distinctly negative affect.

Purple sapphires are lower in price than blue ones. Yellow and green sapphires have traces of iron that gives them their color. Pink sapphires have a trace of the element chromium. Sapphires also occur in shades of orange and brown, and colorless sapphires are sometimes used as diamond substitutes in jewelry
